Ask Louise
Do you know of any good tailors in Dubai to sew curtains, bedding and tablecloths? Do you know anywhere in Dubai that sells Orchid potting mix (Dubai Garden Centre no good!)? Lastly, I am a landscape architect with two small children and haven’t been working for 2 years so I’m looking for a part-time job, from 8:30am to 1pm – any ideas?
There are so many tailors in Satwa that can help you with straight stitching of these items, or if you need them made from scratch, try Al Jaliya Furniture in Bur Dubai (Tel: +971 4 352 1087 /+971 50 419 8568), Azores Furniture in Satwa (Tel: +971 4 349 3323), or you could also go to Dragonmart, where there are many shops that make curtains etc. at great prices – such as Zhongdi Trade, Block GB, shop 02 (Tel: +971 4 368 7214).
Unfortunately I do not know the answer for the potting soil, however have you been to the garden souk in Warsan 2 (just off the Outer bypass road)? If any of our readers know the answer, we would love to hear from you.
Finally with regards to your job hunting, it maybe hard to get a part-time job as a landscape architect but it wouldn’t do any harm sending off a CV to some of the big firms in town, such as Cracknell (who I note from their website are looking for staff) or if you are willing to take a job not to do with landscape architecture, then check out websites such as Dubizzle.
There is a ‘plant souq’ near Satwa. The GPS co-ordinates are N25 13.785, E055 16.385. They are quite close to Ravi’s Restaurant (and the nearby large mosque). There are many shops selling plants, gardening supplies, potting soil etc. It’s well worth the effort, as their prices are substantially better than other better-known gardening stores around Dubai.
Thanks for the great tips Charles. Much appreciated!
