Dubai Expat Interview – Amanda

This week’s Into-yous features British expat Amanda

Tell us a little about yourself:
Worked for a Global Bank for ten years before leaving to focus on my two children. Recently launched a business providing customised birth announcement cards and gift certificates.


When did you move to Dubai and what brought you here?
I was brought up in the Middle East and most of my family are still here. I was posted to Dubai with the Bank in 2001 and again in 2005 and we are still here!

Have you been an expat elsewhere and if so, where?
Kuwait, Jeddah, Riyadh, Hong Kong, Channel Islands

The best advice you were given to prepare you for life in Dubai:
My family were here from when I was 12 years old so I learnt everything on the ground.

What surprised you most about Dubai?
How cold it is anywhere inside and how many families are here now and call it home, not such a transient place any more.

What area do you live in?
Arabian Ranches

If money were no object, where would you most like to live in Dubai?
I would move my house to the beach!

Your favourite Arabic word or phrase you have learned so far:
I am still recovering from my terrible attempt to learn the language at school in Kuwait!

Your least favourite word or phrase you have adopted since moving to Dubai:
Why does that child not have a seatbelt on?

What has been your best experience in Dubai to date?
Christmas Eve on a friend’s boat.

Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?

Who is the person you most miss when you are in Dubai?
My cousin, Alison.

What is your favourite restaurant in Dubai?

What grocery item do you most miss from your home country?
Sainsbury’s bread

When friends and family visit you in Dubai where will you absolutely take them?
Mango Tree for dinner and to watch the fountains.
