Dubai Expat Interview – Georgina Enzer

This week’s Into-yous features British expat Georgina Enzer.

Tell us a little about yourself
I am a journalist/writer and have lived in Dubai for three years. I have developed a passion for helping UAE and Middle Eastern rock and metal musicians get heard and was driven to start my own music website and online radio station in May 2010.

When did you move to Dubai and what brought you here?
I moved to Dubai at the end of 2008, I had been working as a journalist in Pakistan for a year and I wanted a change of scenery!

Have you been an expat elsewhere and if so, where?
Yes, I have spent my entire life as an expat. I moved to Zimbabwe from England as a small child and lived there until I was around 21 and have lived and worked in Zambia, Mozambique, the US, UK, South Africa, Germany, Ivory Coast and Pakistan.

The best advice you were given to prepare you for life in Dubai
‘It’s really hot!’

What surprised you most about Dubai?
That there was actually an underground music scene. When I first came here all I saw were the blingy clubs and fake tans and thought that was it. Now I have discovered a thriving underground music scene full of down-to-earth people.

What area do you live in?
Tecom

If money were no object, where would you most like to live in Dubai?
I would love to live in a nice villa with a green garden and trees! Maybe Arabian Ranches or Springs.

Your favorite Arabic word or phrase you have learned so far
Inshallah – it reminds me of the African phrase ‘just now’, which can also mean something will happen in two seconds or two years, or never.

Your least favorite word or phrase you have adopted since moving to Dubai
I don’t think I have a least favourite to be honest!

What has been your best experience in Dubai to date?
Discovering that Dubai is not all about wearing designer clothes and driving designer cars, that there actually is some heart and soul to the place.

Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
In South Africa, in the bush!

Who is the person you most miss when you are in Dubai?
I miss all of my family who are scattered across the globe.

What is your favorite restaurant in Dubai?
Pregos at media Rotana. Yummy Italian food with the most amazing crunchy bread or Ravis in Satwa – amazing Pakistani food at incredible prices.

What grocery item do you most miss from your home country?
Koeksisters and Milk tart made by the lady who runs the grocery store near our farm in South Africa!

When friends and family visit you in Dubai where will you absolutely take them?
Ravis in Satwa – a not very well-kept expat secret that serves the best Pakistani food in town at amazing prices. it is a must do thing!
