Dubai Expat Interview – Rabia Akram Khan

This week’s Into-yous features Pakistani expat Rabia Akram Khan.

Tell us a little about yourself
Hey. Well many people here in Dubai know me by my business name that is Kakes by Me. I am a mother to three beautiful girls and after fulfilling my duties as a mom, I am a cake decorator in order to satisfy my inner artist 🙂

When did you move to Dubai and what brought you here?
After getting married, I came to start a new life in Abu Dhabi. We later settled in Dubai and its been 3 years now.

Have you been an expat elsewhere and if so, where?
Yes. I have lived in Abu Dhabi and in Oman before moving to Dubai.

The best advice you were given to prepare you for life in Dubai
I was open to all the new changes and challenges, so never really any.

What surprised you most about Dubai?
Oh the fast life here and how everyone is prepared to accept sudden changes, be it the weather or the rules.

What area do you live in?
International City.

If money were no object, where would you most like to live in Dubai?
Silicon Oasis. I just love the peaceful environment there.

Your favorite Arabic word or phrase you have learned so far
There are quite a few but the one I use a lot is kaali waali 😛

Your least favorite word or phrase you have adopted since moving to Dubai
Every word has its significance so I feel if used appropriately… no word or phase.

What has been your best experience in Dubai to date?
When I started my business and seeing it grow is what I cherish the most.

Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
I love rain – so anywhere where it rains.

Who is the person you most miss when you are in Dubai?
My younger brother.

What is your favorite restaurant in Dubai?
I love McDonalds 😛 but I’m a foodie so I love eating out and every restaurant here serves at least one thing that I love – tough choices!

What grocery item do you most miss from your home country?
We normally get everything here but one this I miss the most is the sweets from the local bakeries.

When friends and family visit you in Dubai where will you absolutely take them?
I would want them to see the beaches here, they are simply beautiful.
