Dubai Expat Interview – Roxanne Mb
This week’s Into-yous features South-African expat Roxanne Mb.
Tell us a little about yourself
I’m originally South African, currently working in Dubai as a freelance writer and more recently as a freelance events coordinator. I’m just finding my way and enjoying the journey.
When did you move to Dubai and what brought you here?
We moved out here back in 2001 when my Dad was offered a golden opportunity to work in Abu Dhabi. After about 9 years of watching the capital grow exponentially, we eventually moved up to the more glamorous city of Dubai (and loving every minute of it!).
Have you been an expat elsewhere and if so, where?
I’ve only ever lived between South Africa and the UAE, but having been here so long I feel more like an expat when in South Africa than I do here!
The best advice you were given to prepare you for life in Dubai
Brace yourself – there’s only one season!
What surprised you most about Dubai?
Since I came here fairly young, the most surprising element was the fact that I went to a segregated school. I could not get my head around having to spend every school day with only girls (boys are so much more entertaining!).
What area do you live in?
Dubai Marina.
If money were no object, where would you most like to live in Dubai?
Definitely the area by Qamardeen Hotel. It’s breath-taking.
Your favorite Arabic word or phrase you have learned so far
InshAllah has to be the one. When I use it, it allows me to feel like I’m giving someone hope without blatantly saying ‘no’ and when I hear someone use it on me, I know not to hold my breath. It’s a win-win situation.
Your least favorite word or phrase you have adopted since moving to Dubai
None in particular.
What has been your best experience in Dubai to date?
I’ve had so many great experiences living here that there is not one thing that triumphs over another. Let’s just say 2011 has been my most memorable year to date.
Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Italy or Germany.
Who is the person you most miss when you are in Dubai?
My sisters back in South Africa, more than anything!
What is your favorite restaurant in Dubai?
Toscana at Madinat Jumeirah – great Italian food and wine for a decent dime.
What grocery item do you most miss from your home country?
Zoo biscuits. I may be 22, but my inner child will never give up those colourful animal treats!
When friends and family visit you in Dubai where will you absolutely take them?
The Pavilion – talk about a conceptual place for art, culture and food to merge.
