Dubai Expat Interviews – Sandra van Zyl

This week’s Into-yous features South African expat Sandra van Zyl.

When did you move to Dubai and what brought you here
Sep 2006. Needed a complete change of home and work circumstances – the best choice I have ever made at the age of 54!

Have you been an expat elsewhere and if so, where

The best advice you were given to prepare you for life in Dubai
My own advice was to see everything as a challenge – eventually I was told, you will not change Dubai, Dubai will change you!

What surprised you most about Dubai
The cruelty of animals or rather the lack of knowledge of humans towards animals

If money were no object, where would you most like to live in Dubai
Next to Alexis!

Your favorite Arabic word or phrase you have learned so far
“Kaifa haluk habibi” (how are you my friend)

Your least favorite word or phrase you have adopted since moving to Dubai
“Ma’am, your good name please” – sounds like a tape recorder! I haven’t adopted it though

What has been your best experience in Dubai to date
I can leave my doors open, I have tranquility, serenity – I can walk my dogs at night without any fear – what more can you ask for at my age

Where do you hope to spend your next holiday
I am on holiday – even though I still work fulltime!

Who is the person you most miss when you are in Dubai
No one – my children are also here

What is your favorite restaurant in Dubai
The food courts ha, ha! Definitely the Bateaux glass boat where you not only get a five star, five course meal and five star service, but at the same time a five star scenic tour on the Creek where you see Dubai at night from a total different angle.

What grocery item do you most miss from your home country
Miracle Whip (although you do sometimes find it here)

When friends and family visit you in Dubai where will you absolutely take them
The Bateaux is a must! A desert safari is a must! Burj Al Arab is a must and of course – all the malls!
