Car Safety for Newborns

It is sad news that traffic deaths are the no.1 infant killer in the UAE. About 62 per cent of infant mortality in the UAE is a result of car traffic accidents (to read more click here)

It is strongly recommended that all infants should ride in a rear-facing car seat from their first ride home from the hospital. Your cuddles can never replace the support of an infant car seat in case of sudden stops, minor or major car accidents.

Buying a car seat

Car seats are expensive, but they also protect the most valuable and vulnerable loved one you have. Remember that a higher price does not always mean the seat is safer or easier to use than the cheaper ones. The type of seat your child needs depends on several things, like your baby’s size and the type of vehicle you have.

The best seat for your baby is the one that fits his/her size, fits well in your car and is correctly installed. It must be used correctly every time you drive.

Important to remember

Never place a rear-facing infant seat in the front seat or near an airbag.

It is ok to buy a used car seat, but you need to know the car seat’s history. Do not use car seats that have been involved in a crash, even a minor one.

A snug harness is important. In a crash, the shoulder straps hold your baby down in the car seat.

To help support the baby’s head, the seat should lie back, but not more than a 45-degree angle.
