Home Grown Children’s Eco Nursery

Dubai’s first eco and socially responsible children’s nursery concept now open in Jumeirah.

An exciting new children’s nursery is raising the bar for local education since it’s opening this September. Founded by Lucy Bruce a qualified UK Primary teacher and mum-of-three Beverly Jatwani, Home Grown is the region’s first eco-friendly nursery, with a focus on providing its children with a unique pre-school learning experience taking place within the framework of a socially responsible environment.

Nestled in the heart of Umm Suqeim, Home Grown Children’s Eco Nursery believes that every child can make a positive impact on Planet Earth and that it is never too early to start making a difference – a message that is continuously reinforced both inside and out. Alongside a more traditional education, children will be shown the value of caring for their natural habitat through an engaging program entitled “The Green Curriculum” which reinforces the nursery’s belief in being ‘Nurtured by Nature’. Focused on the conservation and preservation of our planet, the specially devised syllabus promotes composting, recycling and organic gardening for a more meaningful interaction with nature. Combined with the British Early Years Foundation Stage, children are expected to reap the benefits of a dual-pronged educational approach designed to give them a well-balanced formative experience.

Home Grown’s expansive sensory and eco gardens provide the ideal setting for numerous physical activities, including mini sports, nature observations, gardening and Pilates. Within Home Grown’s four walls, the nursery’s eco-credentials are embellished with natural toys painted with chemical-free soy paints, fans in every room to reduce energy consumption and improve the quality of air circulation, eco friendly bamboo flooring used extensively throughout the nursery to name a few.

Beyond simply being an outstanding centre for the Early Years, Home Grown Children’s Eco Nursery also endeavors to offer parents a valuable resource. Workshops on topics such as healthy eating, recycling, basic first aid courses takes place throughout the school year with external experts invited to share their advice and knowledge. Parents are encouraged to join the Home Grown’s Eco Committee and will be involved with its Eco Rangers reward system, which encourages children to take care of our planet.

For the founders of Home Grown, the nurturing and educating of children are two areas of expertise. In 2010, Lucy Bruce won an Emirates Woman of the Year Award for her charity Harmony House, a day shelter for destitute street-children in India which provides them with food, education, medical and day care within a safe environment. Through gentle encouragement and engaging activities, Home Grown aims to support the children of Harmony House through pairing it’s children with the nursery and the charitable centre.

Of the venture, Lucy Bruce says:  “As a mum I am continually striving to provide my children with a safe and enjoyable environment. At the same time, it is important that we teach our children the value of being both socially and environmentally aware so that it becomes a part of their daily lives. We hope that our unique teaching methods will inspire a new generation to make a difference.”

Home Grown Eco Nursery is now enrolling students between 12 months and 4 years.
