The Flu Strikes Again, Even in Dubai!

Flu ShotEvery year, millions of people around the world catch the dreaded seasonal flu!  When one thinks of the flu, they think of cold weather, runny noses, itchy eyes and soar throats – one does not however typically think of the desert and palm trees. Despite the fact that Dubai has glorious winter weather, people are nonetheless still prone to catching the flu.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory disease caused by different strains of viruses. Flu viruses spread from person to person when people who are infected sneeze or cough. These viruses spread easily in cold dry air, making people living the UAE more susceptible in winter.

Flu vaccines can be given every year – mostly in the autumn before the start of the flu season. Getting vaccinated before helps maintain the immunity levels against the present strains of the virus. Children, the elderly as well as people with health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications. It is highly recommended that they get vaccinated.

You can also protect yourself and others by following these common sense guidelines/suggestions:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then discard the tissue.
Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth (germs spread easily this way).
Avoid close contact with sick people. Likewise, if you are sick, limit your contact with others in order to keep from infecting them.
