Driving Fines in Dubai

driving fines in duaiMoving to Dubai you may have heard horror stories of driving in Dubai. However, from conversations with recent new arrivals  all have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to drive in Dubai.  This is largely due to the fact that over the past few years there has been an emergence of more and more speed cameras, better roads and stricter penalties on bad driving.

Unlike other countries fines for traffic violations only have to be paid once a year when you go to re-register your vehicle however this is not to be recommended as sometimes you can be in for a nasty and expensive surprise as the fines mount up because you are not always informed that you have committed a violation.  It is therefore recommended to log onto the Dubai Police Website  periodically to check if you have fines and pay them online.

Violations can be simply a fine, fine and black point or both of these plus confiscation of your vehicle for a period of time.  Black points stay on your license for one year and once you accrue 24 you will be banned from driving for one year.

It is worth noting that fines are charged to the vehicle so it is the person the vehicle is registered to who is liable for the fine irrespective if he/she was driving the car at the time the violation was committed.  However, black points can be transferred over to the actual driver by visiting RTA customer service centres across Dubai.

Occasionally you will receive fines for parking, speeding etc when you were not even in the country.  If this happens you will need to take up the issue with the traffic department.

Avoid paying fines

  • Pay attention to the speed limit.  Some roads which you think should be 120km suddenly drop down to 80km eg Al Ain Road approaching Business Bay Bridge/Oud Metha Road, Hessa Street
  • Always wear seatbelts – get everyone in the car to put their seat belts on before you set off.
  • Do not talk on the phone – use hands-free devices
  • Parking – check if you are parked in a metered zone and feed the meter manually or better still pay by sms which is easy and you are prompted if you want to add more time to the meter which is ideal if you are in a meeting and cannot pop out to feed the meter. The money is just taken off your phone credit.
  • Do not jump a red light.  The green light will start flashing before it is about to go to red so if you see a green light flashing slow down and get ready to stop – do not speed up.  If you jump a red light you will not only be faced with a fine but your car will also be confiscated for 15 days.
  • Do not drink and drive!
