dubai-writers'-centreA new cultural landmark celebrating the written and spoken word opens its doors today in the historic heart of Dubai. The Dubai International Writers’ Centre (DIWC), the first of its type in the Middle East, will be an international hub and a focal point for creativity, whilst also fostering an appreciation of the ways in which different cultures express themselves in the written and spoken form.

The DIWC was officially launched at a grand opening ceremony held in the Centre’s home in the picturesque Al Shindagha Historical Neighbourhood. Attendees, including superstars of the international writing world, top Arab authors and local dignitaries, were given a glimpse into the history of the region and treated to Nabati poetry recitals and cultural performances to commemorate the opening.

The DIWC provides a space for visiting writers and writers-in-residence, who will lead courses in creative writing in all its disciplines – fiction and non-fiction; poetry; lyrics; play-writing; film scriptwriting and calligraphy. Read more

Would-be novelists have the opportunity of taking the first step on the publishing ladder thanks to a competition organised by the Emirates Festival of Literature. The writing competition gives previously unpublished writers, who must be over 21, the opportunity to have their work reviewed by leading UK literary agent Luigi Bonomi and to attend the London Book Fair.

directors-chairBackstage is all set to kick-start its short play season 2013-2014 with the first call-out for potential writers & directors.

There will be 2 evenings of short plays for this season. Each evening will have multiple plays ranging from 10 mins to 1 hour in length. While there will be well-known scripts that will be put up during these evenings, we are also looking for original scripts that could be put up as well. As usual, Backstage will keep its aim of trying to encourage new talent during our short play season. Therefore, no prior experience is required to either write or director the short plays.
