Dubai-based Surf School hosts inaugural Stand Up Paddling event

The “Sunset SUP Classic” is an inaugural Stand Up Paddle (SUP) event hosted by Internationally Accredited Surf School, Surf Dubai, at Umm Suqueim Public Beach.

The first official event of its kind in Dubai will see men, women and children take to the water on either 23rd or 24th March, 2012 (weather dependent).

Open to participants are the sprint, ladies, kids and relay divisions but the main attraction will be the open division, where Dubai’s elite paddlers will battle it out to be crowned Dubai’s fastest Stand Up Paddler.

Participants in the event will race on 3 different courses mapped out by Surf Dubai owners Scott Chambers and Daniel Van Dooren. Judging will be based on who can complete the set course in the fastest time.

Presented by Quiksilver and approved by Dubai Sports Council, the event is also being held in collaboration with NSP, Barakat, LIIVE eyewear, Flipflop Arabia and Leisure Marine.

The calm conditions of the gulf make Dubai the ideal place to learn to SUP, the fastest growing water sport in the world. The sport involves standing on a long board and propelling yourself with one paddle. Although it requires good balance and core strength, the sport is very easy to pick up with Surf Dubai Managing Director, Scott Chambers, quoting a “2-minute learning curve” for those willing to try. “This is going to be the largest SUPing event in the UAE, bringing together the active community and fitness enthusiasts with beach culture.”
