Dubai London Clinic will conduct Free Blood Glucose (Diabetes) Testing on World Diabetes Day – Wednesday, 14 November.

In aid of World Diabetes Day on Wednesday, 14 November 2012, Dubai London Clinic will be doing free blood glucose tests at two of their Branches. Diabetes is increasing and a lot of residents are unaware that they might have the disease.

Diabetes takes the lives of almost 4 million people every year. In a study done in the US more or less 7 million people are undiagnosed.

The UAE is ranked second highest worldwide for diabetes prevalence. About 19.5% the of population is currently living with diabetes according to statistics released by the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre at the Arab Health Congress in 2010.

It was also discovered that 40 per cent of residents over 60 have diabetes and the number is expected to increase over the coming years. Diabetes mellitus constitutes 75 per cent of deaths among UAE nationals and 31 per cent among non-nationals.

Symptoms include abnormal thirst and a dry mouth, extreme tiredness/lack of energy, slow-healing wounds, blurred vision, frequent urination, sudden weight loss, constant hunger, sudden weight loss and recurrent infections.

Dubai London Clinic will do free blood pressure testing on World Diabetes Day this Wednesday, 14 November. The tests will be conducted in 2 of their 3 branches which includes Dubai London Speciality Hospital in Jumeirah Beach Road and in their branch in Dubai Festival City close to Ikea on the ground floor.

Operations Manager, Sameer Saheed says: “Diabetes is on the increase in the UAE and it is shocking to know how many residents are unaware that they have the disease. Diabetes is manageable and most people can live a good life with it, but it can be very dangerous if you are not aware that you have diabetes.”

He added: “Through this initiative hope to raise awareness and educate the community, but also to support the individuals that learn they have diabetes.”
