After sell out shows and wowing audiences with their spectacular Grand Gala Ballet in September, 2011 The First Group Theatre brings you Swan Lake. The famous tale of a princess turned into a Swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. Featuring twenty six dancers, prepare yourselves for two and a half hours of pure elegance and grace.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake was composed in 1875 as a commission by Vladimir Petrovich Begichev, the intendant of the Russian Imperial Theatres in Moscow.

Today, Swan Lake is probably the best known ballet in the world, yet it did not have great success in Tchaikovsky’s lifetime. The famous music was originally performed with different choreography and found little acclaim at its premiere in 1880. It was not until 1893, the year that Tchaikovsky died, that the celebrated choreographers Marius Petipa and his colleague Lev Ivanonv created the ballet as it is now known.

Swan lake is known for its demanding technical skills all because of one extremely gifted ballerina, Pierina Legani. She performed with such grace and discipline, the audience and everyone else who saw her claimed she set the bar. The prestige that comes from performing Swan lake flawlessly is invaluable.
