World Blood Donor Day
Each year on the 14th June, countries worldwide celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign, “Every blood donor is a hero” focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. While recognizing the silent and unsung heroes who save lives every day through their blood donations, the theme also strongly encourages more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly.
In recent years, and still today, as expats in Dubai we see many appeals for blood donations through the media and social networking sites however, usually these comes at the eleventh hour when a fellow expat has become critically ill and is in dire need. Sometimes this is just too late. In our home countries blood donation is a regular part of many people’s lives, but just because we are not at home does not mean we should stop donating, as you don’t know when you, your loved ones or someone else’s loved ones may need some blood.
